The 2001
Asle Enger Award presentation took place during the Saturday night dinner at
the Norwegian Military Academy in connection with the FebruaryKBS annual conference
2001.
Maj Baard Maeland the recipient of the 2001 prize was present together with his wife. The daughter and son-in-law of the deceased Asle Enger were present. The prize was a painting from the Norwegian artist Veslemøy Stoltenberg. In his speech the past Chief of Chaplains of Norway mentioned three reasons why the committee had chosen Baard as the 2001 prize winner:
1. First his work with ethical questions and his work in the War Academy as such, and last, but not least, his work with establishing the periodical "Pacem", the first in its category in Norway dealing with ethical problems related to war and Christian faith.
2. His work on his doctor theological graduate dealing with the question about Muslim and the Christian faith, which will be very important also for military men serving abroad in muslim countries.
3.The new-
and likely the first in the whole world! - the "Journal of International
Military Ethics, planned with its first number in January 2002, initiated by
Baard and with himself as the first editor. And with highly qualified members
in the international editorial staff.
Asle Enger before he died wrote several letters to Baard to encourage him with
all these projects.
