ETHICAL CHALLENGES FOR THE MILITARY PROFESSION
by - Fredrik Bull-Hansen
While ethics and values are "in", much of today’s focus on values clearly goes beyond the fact that the subject is fashionable. One of the greatest ethical challenges facing military personnel is the use of lethal force when necessary. These challenges must be seriously contemplated before the situations arise. In warfare individual soldiers must use personal evaluations and decisions to make ethical decisions. While cultural differences must be understood when military personnel work in cooperation with personnel from other nations, respect for the uniqueness of all human beings is common to most societies.
