Character Development at the U.S. Naval Academy
by - William B. Garrett Vice Academic Dean U.S. Naval Academy
Character development has been part of the Naval Academy
program since the school was founded more than 150 years ago.
A strong emphasis on moral and ethical behavior has been an
element of continuity throughout the years. Recent events
caused a refocusing on a formal program of character development
which now exists for all midshipmen in a four year continuum.
The presentation will:
- outline the historical precedents for a program of
character development
- explain recent reemphasis on character development and
- creation of a formal program
- describe the current Character Development Program
- outline methods of assessment
- describe the Naval Academy's goals for the future
The Naval Academy has instituted an impressive program of applied
ethics and has established a Character Development Program of
distinctive excellence.
