A Cry For Moral Action

by - Cdr Bradley Y. Winsted, (ret) USN

For every solder to be truly excellent and fit for duty his "moral education" must be addressed. A brief review of Russian writer Alexander Soltzhenitsyn's and VADM James Stockdale's (highly decorated POW from Vietnam War) writings on the need for a moral and spiritual code to live by. Soltzhenitsyn concludes that "rationalistic humanism" in the West is failing and the true fulfillment of life is realized in a moral code. Stockdale states that warfare must be accompanied by a clear understanding of what is "right and wrong" otherwise combat situations and deprivations will define it for you. Author reviews standing Navy Regulations, U.S. Fighting Code and Biblical examples of moral teaching and beliefs.
